Alan Kaufman’s WRITING CLASS
Wednesdays, October 25-January 3, 2006 (Dec. 27th will be skipped)
7-9:30 PM, 10 sessions for $375 Study with the acclaimed author

“Was it a coincidence that I was published for the very first time the same
year that I took Alan Kaufman\'s memoir workshop? I think not! Alan
helped me find a way through my resistance and fear by providing direction
and feedback, community, and a safe environment where I could find my voice,
reveal my truth, and develop my material. I would highly recommend this
class to anyone!”
WENDY MERRILL, former student, recently signed with
Putnam/Penguin for her memoir

“Alan is an inspiring teacher and a passionate person. He taught me the
invaluable lesson of how to get to the heart of my story. He showed me how
to forever incorporate writing into my life and encouraged me to never stop.
His class is magical
RACHEL SONTAG, former student recently signed with Ecco/HarperCollins for
her memoir

Why does a publisher buy a memoir or novel from someone unknown? Because
readers are hungry for accounts of triumph over personal adversity.. In this
class, you will identify the tale you lived to tell and then proceed to tell
it, as a novel or in a memoir. Getting it out of the heart and onto the
page is our most important commitment as writers. In this class you will
learn the essentials of how to write a book. Working in two-person teams,
students will help each other to meet daily writing quotas, with the goal of
completing the first draft of a full-length work of fiction or non-fiction.

Alan Kaufman’s novel Matches was published by Little, Brown and Company in
the Fall of 2005 and reviewed on the cover of the San Francisco Chronicle
Book Review. His critically-acclaimed memoir, Jew Boy (Fromm/Farrar,Strauss,
Giroux), has appeared in the United States and Great Britain. He is the
award-winning editor of three anthologies, the most recent of which, The
Outlaw Bible of American Literature, was reviewed on the cover of the New
York Times Book Review.
